A Statistical Review of Aviation Airframe Icing Accidents in the U.S

A statistical review of U.S. aviation airframe icing accidents that occurred during the 19-year period from 1982 through 2000 is presented. The National Transportation Safety Board aviation accident/incident database was used to identify accidents in which airframe icing was noted as a cause or factor in the event. The resulting 583 cases were examined collectively, as well as by their respective segments of operation. These segments of operation include general aviation, air taxis, commuter airlines, and major airlines and cargo carriers. This study discusses the number of fatal and nonfatal accidents, spatial and temporal distribution of accidents, phase of flight, and pilot experience. Overall, the annual accident rate associated with airframe icing decreased during the period. This result is largely due to the decline in general aviation accidents, which were responsible for over three quarters of the accidents reviewed herein.
