Suitability of the Judd Ultrasonic Snow Depth Sensor for Estimating 6- and 24-Hour Snowfall Amounts

Currently, snow depth sensing is not a component of the National Weather Service (NWS) Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS). A study has been conducted during the 2001-2002 winter season to assess the suitability and reliability of the Judd Ultrasonic Snow Depth Sensor for possible use as a supplement to ASOS. In particular, questions relating to the spatial variability of snowfall and the representativeness of single point measurements have been examined. Sites located in Arizona, Colorado and Ohio were selected for deployment of the Judd Sensor, and the data collected were analyzed alongside collocated human observations.
