An intense MCS observed over Niamey, Niger on 11 August 2006

Matthew A. Janiga, University at Albany, Albany, NY; and C. Thorncroft and E. Williams

As part of the African Monsoon Multidisciplanary Analyses (AMMA) project, the MIT radar provided an unprecedented sample of detailed radar observations of African MCSs over Niamey, during the summers of 2006 and 2007. Based on an analysis of the radar data in association with information from raingauges and synoptic observations the characteristics of an intense MCS that passed over Niamey on August 11th, 2006 will be presented, including: the morphology, propagation, and rainfall. Rainfall analyses will include an estimation of the contribution from convective and stratiform rainfall.
