A method for monitoring the calibration and pointing accuracy of a radar network

Asko J. Huuskonen, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Helsinki, Finland

We will describe a numerical method by which the calibration difference of two radars, as well as the difference in their elevation angles, can be determined from the reflecitivity data. The method is based on using data measured by two radars on their common field-of-view. The method is not limited to points measured at same altitudes by the two radars and also does not require the knowledge of the vertical reflectivity profile. The aim of the study is to develop a monitoring software by which it is possible to analyze the calibration differences and differences in the collecting angles within a network of radars. We will present results obtained by applying the the method to data collected within NORDRAD, the Nordic weather radar network.
