Improvement of VVP method retrieval 3D wind field

Ming Wei, Nanjing Univ., Nanjing, China; and W. Ge

Theoretically, three-dimension(3D) wind field and the other kinematic quantities could be obtained by using the volume velocity processing (VVP) method in wind field retrieval with single-Doppler radar volume data. However, ever since the theory was formed, it has never been fully and truly applied to practice due to the large vertical speed error. This paper, through research, has found that ill coefficient matrix is the key block in efficient retrieval of vertical speed field and the other parameters. Based upon numerical analysis theory, feasible algorithm has also been studied as an attempt to solve the problem of ill matrix in linear equations. Numerical experiments have also been conducted with single-Doppler radar data and tested with dual-Doppler radar data observed in HUBEX_IOP. The results show that better retrieval of three-dimension wind field can be obtained with the method in this paper. Especially, the retrieval of vertical speed is obviously much better than that of the previous studies.
