High-resolution WSR-88D base data on the KOUN research radar

High-resolution WSR-88D base data has the potential of increasing the detection range of mesocyclone and tornado vortex signatures thus leading to increased warning times for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. This increase in detection range is the result of stronger signatures and more detailed images of vortex circulations. Whereas current base data is collected at 1° intervals with 1 km reflectivity resolution and 250 m resolution for velocity and spectrum width, the proposed high-resolution base data is collected at 0.5° intervals with 250 m resolution for all the spectral moments. Legacy WSR-88D algorithms were modified for the RDA (Radar Data Acquisition) portion of the KOUN research radar to produce the new high-resolution base data stream. The algorithms were verified by comparing both high and low resolution data from the same weather event. Because existing RPG (Radar Product Generation) algorithms utilize the current base data format, recombining the high-resolution base data in the RPG is also discussed. Despite the increase in bandwidth between the RDA and the RPG and the additional signal processing requirements, real-time tests show that this enhancement is indeed feasible for early implementation in future WSR-88D upgrades.
