A multi-Doppler analysis of convective initiation on 10 June 2002 during IHOP_2002

On 10 June 2002 during the International H2O Project (IHOP), two Doppler on Wheels (DOW) mobile radars, the University of Connecticut XPOL mobile radar, and the Shared Atmospheric Research and Teaching mobile radar (SMART-R) continuously observed a quasi-stationary cold front near Ness City, Kansas. Small scale circulations (misoscylones) along the cold front, horizontal convective rolls behind the cold front, and an intersection of a thin line with the cold front were observed by all four radars. Multiple -Doppler syntheses and thermodynamic analyses are examined to determine the formation of these features and the means by which they influenced the boundary layer moisture field. While convection initiated within the range of the DOW radars, it was outside the intensively observed section of the boundary. Reasons for this are examined.
