Operational use of a hydrometeor classification algorithm to detect the snow melting level

Kevin Scharfenberg, CIMMS/Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK; and E. Maxwell

On 3-4 December 2002, a winter storm moved across Oklahoma, producing a variety of precipitation types. A hydrometeor classification algorithm was used on polarimetric radar data and made available to National Weather Service forecasters as part of the Joint Polarization Experiment (JPOLE). The algorithm output helped forecasters evaluate the altitude, slope, and evolution, of the snow melting level. An overview of this case, including observed atmospheric soundings, is presented.
