A passive microwave retrieval for tropical cyclones called Hurricane GPROF (Goddard PROFiling algorithm) has been expanded beyond the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific ocean basins it was originally developed for. This new global version of Hurricane GPROF estimates oceanic rain rates, as well as hydrometeor profiles of rain, ice, mixed, and cloud water content. Latent heat profiles are also now included in the retrieval. The structure of inner and outer rainbands from Hurricane GPROF and the TRMM Precipitation Radar/GPM Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar are examined for tropical cyclones of different sizes and intensities. Heating profiles and their relationship with rain rates/hydrometeor profiles in these storms are also explored.
