Historic Houston snow: Out on a limb

Gene Norman Jr., KHOU-TV, Houston, TX

On Nov. 30, 2009, computer models indicated that Houston could receive several inches of snow four days later. As preposterous as this appeared, I believed it and began broadcasting this forecast each day leading up to the historic event.

Successive computer models continued to reinforce the scenario of a surge of moisture arriving south of Houston as arctic air pushed in from the north. Indeed, large (for Houston) amounts of snow fell on Dec. 4, 2009.

I'll show portions of our on-air coverage for that week day as well as illustrate the meteorological conditions that produced this very rare event.
