An AWIPS-Based Forecasting Course For Science Educators

Alan C. Czarnetzki, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA

The Science Center for Teaching, Outreach, and Research on Meteorology (The STORM Project) at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a cooperative program between NOAA and UNI. During summer 2003, STORM is sponsoring 2 sections of a forecasting course designed specifically for middle and high school science educators. The centerpiece technology for this hands-on course is FX-Net, developed by the Forecast Systems Laboratory. FX-Net emulates the National Weather Service's AWIPS package. This paper will provide an overview of the course and present our experiences with the 48 educators who will be in attendance. Another offering of the course is planned for summer 2004.
