Integrating Weather Studies in the Physical Sciences

Shermane A. Austin, Medgar Evers, City University of New York, Brooklyn, NY; and L. P. Johnson, J. Flowers, and C. Baldwin

Medgar Evers College is a small minority-serving institution with a student population of approximately 5000. Undergraduate science education has been strengthened with the support of several NASA grants for curriculum development in the Physical Sciences. These courses have been enhanced using an approach originating with the NASA-funded NOVA program coupling educational pedagogy with science content. An important component lacking in the general science curriculum, however, has been a focus on basic principles of Meterology. Faculty from the college are participating in the AMS Online Weather Studies program to integrate these modules initially into the Physical Science curriculum with the eventual goal of offering a Weather Studies/Introduction to Meteorology course which would be one of the options for general science education.
