Errors of the day, bred vectors and singular vectors: implications for ensemble forecasting and data assimilation

Shu-Chih Yang, University of Maryland, College Park, MD; and M. Corazza and E. Kalnay

We compare the analysis and forecast “errors of the day” obtained with a quasi-geostrophic simulation of a 3D-Var data assimilation system (Morss et al, 2001) with bred vectors and with singular vectors derived with different norms. This comparison provides guidance on the optimal generation of initial perturbations for ensemble forecasting and the relative advantages of 4D-Var and Ensemble Kalman Filtering.
