During the period of August 15-September 30th 2006, measurements aimed at understanding precipitation processes and their potential linkages to tropical cyclogenesis were undertaken in Senegal. These measurements includes Polarimetric radar, disdrometer, rain gauge, boundary layer and radiation observations. A primary objective of this work was to understand the transition of convective systems as they transition from continental to oceanic environmental conditions. The NASA Polarimetric radar in concert with the Senegalese S-Band radar provide continuous measurements of convective and stratiform rain for continental and ocean areas. A rain gauge network consisting of a coarse network and a fine network allows for comparision to satellite and radar measurements and allows for the analysis of spatial and temporal variability with each precipitation event. These ground measurements in concert with aircraft measurements (DC-8 and FF-20) will yield a rich dataset for understanding precipitation processes. Preliminary results will be presented.
