Impact of GPROF Database on TRMM TMI Retrievals of Precipitation over Korean Peninsula

In this study midlatitude heavy rainfall cases are simulated over Korean Peninsula in the summer with the cloud resolving model University of Wisconsin Nonhydrostatic Modeling System (UW-NMS). Using the retrieved hydrometeor profiles and Successive Order of Interaction (SOI) radiative transfer model, brightness temperatures (TBs) are calculated at microwave frequencies. Simulated cloud-radiation database are applied for retrieval of precipitation in the Goddard Profiling Algorithm (GPROF). GPROF results using existing database underestimate rainfall when compared with Automatic Weather Station (AWS) observation. GPROF results using mixed database shows reasonable rainfall when compared with AWS observation. That results from insufficiency of ice particles in the rainfall system over Korean Peninsula. The existing GPROF database doesn't contain features of midlatitude heavy rainfall system, changma, in the summer. Analysis of the other heavy rainfall cases over Korean Peninsula in the summer confirms these results. Adding simulated database into GPROF database can improve the retrieval accuracy over Korean Peninsula.
