Measurements of convective turbulence using an autonomous Doppler lidar system

Fay Davies, Univ. of Salford, Salford, United Kingdom; and C. G. Collier and G. N. Pearson

The Convective and Orographically Induced Precipitation Study, COPS, is a large European project whose ultimate aim is to improve forecasting of orographically induced convective precipitation. During the summer of 2007 a wide range of instrumentation was deployed around the Black Forest region of Germany. As part of this project the University of Salford deployed an autonomous pulsed Doppler lidar system designed and made by Halo-Photonics. Wind and backscatter data from the lidar have been used to analyse boundary layer growth and turbulence behaviour. Doppler lidar can produce high resolution data both in time and space. This data can be used to produce turbulence statistics that show the how the structure of the turbulence changes with time of day and stability conditions. Data from the COPS trial have been analysed and the results will be presented.
