Verification of the CrIMSS Environmental Data Products for the NPOESS Preparatory Project

Phil Moffa, Northrop Grumman Space Technology (NGST), Redondo Beach, CA, CA; and D. Gu and R. Chu

The CrIMSS suite (CrIS plus ATMS) is responsible for producing three EDRs, namely the Atmospheric Vertical Temperature and Moisture Profiles and the Pressure Profile. EDR performance verification pre-launch is achieved via testing using both synthetic and proxy data. This part of the verification process includes a large number of tests, with particular emphasis on verification of the following EDR attributes: measurement range, measurement uncertainty, accuracy and precision. After conversion of the science code to operational code, the IDPS Performance Acceptance Criteria (IPAC) is used to verify the performance of the Interface Data Processor Segment (IDPS) regarding EDR quality.

As test data and analysis becomes available from the sensor suppliers, NGST uses this to update projected EDR performance and compare this against EDR requirements. Tools used to verify performance include the science codes, the full IDPS retrieval codes, SDR error budgets, and sensitivity analyses utilizing parametric studies of EDR performance with varying sensor capabilities.

Post-Launch Verification will be accomplished by evaluation and documentation of end-to-end EDR performance at the completion of an intensive Cal/Val campaign. An independent audit of EDR performance will be made, including the update of pre-launch analyses and tools and end-of-life projections.

The most current estimates of EDR performance will be presented using both synthetic and proxy data. Sensitivity analyses will be shown and selected SDR error budgets will be displayed. The CrIS testing schedule and how it impacts EDR verification will be discussed.
