The University of Utah 2DVAR analysis system archive is used to assess the impact of local surface roughness during high wind speed events. Directionally dependent surface roughness estimates derived from gustiness statistics are used to assess their influence on the analysis innovations. The utility of potential wind to reduce the variability is assessed using mesonet observations including NWS/FAA ASOS and RAWS networks. Applications include the assessment of model bias.
