The Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) is based on open source concepts.  The design and implementation of the hardware and software architecture is modeled after open source, closed community approaches.  With the implementation of the Services Oriented Architecture (AWIPS II), over a year ago, AWIPS is starting to realize benefits associated with the open source nature of the architecture.  This is directly evident by the recent partnership with the Department of Defense/Department of the Navy (Navy) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/National Weather Service (NWS).  Under this agreement, the Navy will be using AWIPS to support select meteorological functions in support of the Navy mission.  This agreement provides benefits to both the Navy as well as NOAA/NWS.  This presentation will highlight those benefits as well as some of the challenges associated with leveraging the open source nature of AWIPS to support a related but unique set of mission requirements.
