TAMDAR icing data comparisons against RUC model fields

Scott D. Landolt, NCAR, Boulder, CO; and M. K. Politovich and B. C. Bernstein

Data acquired from the TAMDAR Great Lakes Fleet provides an opportunity for comparing in-situ aircraft measurements of temperature, humidity and icing against various RUC model fields such as temperature, dewpoint and liquid water content. While the TAMDAR data itself does not contain measurements of liquid water content, a comparison of positive and negative icing observations against the RUC's liquid water content field can provide useful information for determining greater probabilities of in-flight icing conditions. These and other comparisons can lead to more suitable incorporation of RUC fields into in-flight icing algorithms resulting in improved icing diagnoses and forecasts.
