W4.2

Wind driven ocean circulation workshop (Centre Greene South)

Thomas P. Kelly, Grandville Public Schools, Grandville, MI; and G. Rausch

The surface currents of the major ocean basins can be seen to follow the prevailing wind systems that drive them. These surface currents flow in large roughly circular patterns called gyres. We will investigate gyres by looking at single ocean currents and then building to a global perspective of ocean gyre circulation. Participants will engage in a hands-on investigation which can be used in their classrooms. This activity is developmentally appropriate for grades 4-12 in the United States.
