Texas hurricanes; evaluation of a century of risk

Richard W. Dixon, Texas State University, San Marcos, TX

This year marks the centennial of the Great Galveston Hurricane, the deadliest natural disaster in US history. The paper presents a frequency/intensity analysis of Texas landfalling huricanes this century. For Texas, cycles of relative hurricane inactivity are broken by intense (Category 3 or greater) hurricanes. This has important implications for the emergency management function.
