Polarimetric analysis of a 3 May 1999 tornado

Polarimetric radar data for the May 3, 1999 tornadoes are examined for the first time. Dataset includes 1.5 hours of observations made with the NSSL's Cimarron polarimetric radar. We analyze evolution of the 3D-fields of radar reflectivity, differential reflectivity, differential phase, and cross-correlation coefficient as well as traditional Doppler signatures. The data collected at the 0.0 deg elevation angle provide unique chance to examine tornado signatures very close to the surface. Polarimetric discrimination between rain, hail, and debris caused by a tornado touchdown is being discussed.
