ABSTRACT

GOES rapid scan imagery was used as input to automated wind extraction algorithms developed at UW-CIMSS. Derived wind fields resulting from employing successive rapid scan images are evaluated. It will be shown that more frequent sampling improves the vector field density and quality. The optimal tracking time interval is dependent on spectral band type. A statistical analysis versus rawindsondes will be presented.

Applications of the GOES rapid scan wind fields will be presented and will include examples from hurricanes, severe storms and field experiments.
