GIS Module for the National Weather Service's Management Information Retrieval System

The National Weather Service (NWS) is developing a GIS module for the Management Information Retrieval System (MIRS). MIRS will be a hub interface design with a core database in which other databases throughout the NWS will be linked. Once the linking is complete and the data arranged in a consistent format, the GIS can then use the available data to produce maps, geographic queries and web products for all NWS staff as well as interested public parties.

First stage of the GIS development will be a web page where shape files will reside for individual download. The second priority will be to develop a fully integrated web based mapping system. From this, NWS equipment and systems can then be integrated with other critical data/maps to yield information on a wider scale. The goal is to tie in and link NWS program offices together to provide NWS managers with an effective management and information dissemination tool.
