THE EFFECT OF SNOWMELT ON RIVER STAGES - THE FORT WAYNE RECORD FLOOD OF 1982

Gregory L. Lamberty, NOAA/NWS, Syracuse, IN; and B. F. O'Hara, J. L. Adolphson, and M. R. Hayes

Record floods were recorded in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the spring of 1982. A snow water equivalent data set for this event will be examined to determine the role that snow and snowpack played in the flooding of the Maumee River. The Ft Wayne "Magic River Stage Chart" will be used to determine the river stage resulting from snowmelt as compared to rainfall induced river flooding. Meteorological conditions leading to favorable flooding situations will be presented to aid in future hydrological forecasts. Finally, the use of modernized data sets will be discussed to highlight projected improvements in operational hydrology
