THE DETERMINATION OF THE SMOOTHING PARAMETER FOR SOUNDING RETRIEVAL FROM GOES RADIANCE MEASUREMENTS

Accuracy temperature and water vapor profile retrieval is demonstrated by using the discrepancy principle method to find a proper relative weight between the fits to the measurements and the fits to the background on the GOES spectral measurements. It is shown that the discrepancy principle method can provide a criterion to automatically increase or decrease the smoothing parameter according to the initial profiles, the spectral coverage, the observation error, and the background error. Accurate atmospheric profile retrievals are obtained.
