Joint Panel Disscussion 12 A Meteorologist, a Seismologist, a Volcanologist, and a Decision-maker Walk into a Bar: Improving our own risk and impact communication by examining experiences from outside the weather, water, and climate enterprise

Thursday, 14 January 2021: 4:00 PM-5:00 PM

Description:

Communication of risk and impacts of weather events has been a significant area of focus in recent years within the weather, water, and climate enterprise. We strive to improve our communication of risks and impacts constantly. But communication of risks is not unique to our disciplines, however. The field of seismology deals with this every time there is an earthquake somewhere. Volcanologists deal with risk communication in disparate regions of the globe. Public health experts and decision-makers deal with this daily. Other fields deal with other communication challenges. I believe that we can all learn from one another, through both our successes and failures of communicating impactful science-related problems to the public. This panel/session would aim to share what has worked and perhaps what has not during recent events in fields outside the weather, water, and climate enterprise. The goal would be to tie back their lessons and see where their successes or failures can be applied or tweaked within our enterprise.
