Description:
UAS platforms and in situ and remote sensing capabilities continue to expand as measurement accuracy are validated and improved. Meteorological observations obtained via routine UAS profiling have already begun to be used operationally in some parts of the world to improve aviation weather hazard guidance. Topics to be covered in this session include those that characterize the latest developments in UAS sensing capabilities as well as studies that use UAS data to improve weather guidance to support manned and/or unmanned flight operations. Relevant research and development efforts include those supporting new weather sensing capabilities, optimization of UAS sensing strategies (targeted sampling, swarm technologies, automated profiling) and quantification/improvement of sensor accuracy (response time, post processing techniques) for developing improved weather guidance to support airport operations (e.g., fog or wind modeling) or UAS Traffic Management Systems (UTM). Approaches that use UAS data to develop/improve aviation weather guidance may include using UAS data model validation, data assimilation or processes studies.
