Session 10 The evaluation and application of non-traditional terrestrial and oceanic observations.

Thursday, 14 January 2021: 10:30 AM-11:30 AM

Description:

Marine operations across the global ocean, inland seas, and lakes include the transport of cargo, fishing, offshore construction, oil exploration and production, cable laying and maintenance, surveying, towing, cruising, and military activities to name a few. The global ocean, from the tropics to high latitudes, hosts the many forms of marine operations that by their nature are weather vulnerable and dependent on accurate, timely, and easily understood forecasts and warnings to avoid the extremes and maintain safe and economically viable operations.

This session will serve as a vehicle to discuss the research, operational, observational, and communication challenges of observing, predicting, and warning for extreme weather at sea from the tropics to the Arctic and Antarctic, over short term to sub-seasonal time scales. Encouraged topics include, but are not limited to, extreme extra-tropical cyclones, tropical cyclones, winds, waves, ocean currents, sea ice, polar weather, icebergs, operational decision making, observations, and the communication of weather and oceanographic information.
