Session 10 A Review of the MJO: Progress, Challenges, and Paths Forward / Sub-Seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Predictability and Forecasting: Monsoons and the MJO Part I

Thursday, 14 January 2021: 10:30 AM-11:30 AM

Description:

In the five decades since its discovery, the scientific community has made considerable progress in understanding, modeling, and forecasting the Madden-Julian Oscillation and its global impacts. Yet considerable challenges remain, and addressing these challenges will require collaborative efforts that leverage ever expanding capabilities in observing, modeling, and theory. We invite presentations related to observing, modeling, and theory that seek to summarize progress made, assess our current understanding and capabilities, identify past and present challenges, and offer visions for how to address these challenges.

Tropical convective variability, such as the monsoons and Madden-Julian Oscillation, significantly alters global circulation patterns and is an important source of subseasonal to seasonal predictability. We invite presentations of observing, modeling, and forecasting studies aimed at identifying, quantifying, and leveraging S2S predictability offered by tropical convective variability. We welcome presentations from the entire research-to-operations (R2O) spectrum, hoping to further strengthen collaborative ties between these communities.
