Session 11 Tropical Field Campaign Collective: PISTON, YMC, and OTREC / Tropical-Extratropical Interactions

Thursday, 14 January 2021: 1:00 PM-2:00 PM

Description:

Recent years have seen several exciting field campaigns and observing efforts aimed at improving understanding and prediction of tropical convective variability. We invite presentations related to these efforts, specifically Propagation of Intra-Seasonal Tropical OscillatioNs (PISTON, 2018), Years of the Maritime Continent (YMC, 2017-2020), Organization of Tropical East Pacific Convection (OTREC, 2019). These presentations may be related to in situ and remote sensing observations, limited area and global modeling, as well as more general presentations related to the organization, implementation, and synthesis of these observing efforts.

Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) teleconnections significantly alter global circulation patterns and are an important source of subseasonal to seasonal predictability.  MJO teleconnections can, in turn, impact the tropical atmosphere and the MJO itself. We invite presentations on theoretical, observational, and modeling studies of MJO teleconnections, extratropical impacts on the MJO, as well as broader topics related to interactions between the tropics and the extratropics. Such broader topics may include other forms of tropical convective variability.
