Joint Session 10B Extratropical Air-Sea Interaction and Climate Impacts

Thursday, 14 January 2021: 10:30 AM-11:30 AM

Description:

Recent advances in high resolution observation, reanalysis, and climate modeling have increasingly revealed the vital role of atmospheric convection and air-sea interaction in large-scale climate variability and change. In the midlatitudes, air-sea interaction associated with  western boundary current sea-surface temperature fronts and extratropical cyclones impacts climate variability on various spatiotemporal scales from extreme weather events to multidecadal climate variability. In particular, the role of ocean mesoscale eddies is emphasized in recent studies. In high latitudes, air-sea interaction is shown to be an integral part of polar amplification and sea-ice change. Large-scale extratropical variability also strongly interacts with the tropical variability via teleconnections. This session invites contributions from theoretical, observational, and modeling studies on the role of midlatitude and high-latitude air-sea interaction in all aspects of climate variability and change including sub-seasonal to decadal climate predictability in the ocean, atmosphere, land, and cryosphere.
