Joint Session 3 Climate change and extreme weather events in the coastal zone: the role of ocean-atmosphere-land interaction

Monday, 11 January 2021: 3:30 PM-4:30 PM

Description:

  • Many open questions regarding the climates of the ocean, atmosphere, and land are especially emphasized at their interface: the coastal regions. Improved understanding and skillful prediction of weather and climate in the coastal environment remain challenging due to inherently fine spatio-temporal scale interactions among the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrological processes, calling for an interdisciplinary and mesoscale approach in observational and modeling studies. This session’s focus is to assess the coastal manifestation in atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrological environments of extreme weather and long-term climate variability. We welcome observational and modeling studies on

  1. Effects of coastal ocean-atmosphere-land coupling on extreme weather events including atmospheric rivers and extratropical cyclones, and inland climate including rainfall and snowfall patterns and cloudiness distribution,
  2. low-frequency climate variability and long-term trend in coastal environments, including interaction between the coastal environment and large-scale climate variability and change,
  3. building and testing of the capacity for hindcasts and forecasts of the coastal climate using integrated Earth System models,
  4. development of tools for assessing uncertainty estimates of predictions at coastal scales.
