Evaluating the Evidence Basis for Change - Community Input on Select NCEP Products and the Road Ahead.

In the fall of 2023, NCEP hosted a half-day partners’ workshop at the NWA Annual Meeting’s Broadcasters Conference, with the goal of using social science evidence to consider updates to select products and services from NHC, SPC and WPC. In particular, participants offered insight into their current use of and preferences for change for the SPC Convective Outlook, the WPC Winter Storm Severity Index, and NHC presentation of total tropical risk, based on presentations made by the Centers and social science researchers.

In this panel session, representatives from each Center, NWS partners and research social scientists will provide an overview of the current state of operational practice and social science research related to these products, reflect on the feedback that was offered at the Workshop, and highlight how social science research can be brought “the last mile” toward operations through partner engagements like this one. The audience will be encouraged to offer reflections on the social science research, ideas about operational implications of the research, and preferences for product evolution.
