The NOAA NESDIS planned five-year product investment strategy prioritizes focus areas based upon recent user engagements and NOAA strategic goals. This presentation will provide more information about the planned product-related achievements, as well as the strategies for continuing robust user engagement to inform product portfolio tactical decisions and to identify and on-ramp new innovations and technical solutions during the improvement process. The five-year product investment strategy is updated annually with a sliding five-year outlook window and priorities to incorporate the latest relevant strategic and tactical information. The emphasis areas for the current plan and five-year outlook are to prioritize improvements related to the following areas:

  • User Engagement Focus Areas: Fires, floods, air quality and space weather are areas where improvements in NOAA NESDIS products will have high value as identified through ongoing user engagement efforts.
  • Blue economy: Ocean color, ocean surface winds, sea surface temperature, and radar/lidar altimetry data support the NOAA Strategic Plan goal for a blue economy, and specifically are used in applications and to generate information needed for resilient coastal communities.
  • Climate: Improving quality and usefulness of foundational climate products such as NESDIS climate data records and radiation budget products in coordination with the NOAA Climate Program Office and the NOAA Climate Prediction Center contribute to our understanding, monitoring and prediction of climate change.

The desired outcome is to have NOAA NESDIS products that support advanced capabilities for our changing planet and the resultant evolving needs for information.
