NESDIS Ground Enterprise Integration Roadmaps Abstract

NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service (NESDIS) performed a Ground Enterprise Study (NGES) to identify the most capable and cost-effective ground architecture(s) for NESDIS to invest in for near-, mid-, and long-term success of its mission, addressing the full range of NESDIS ground operations. The following six key functional attributes that support ground operations were identified to study:

• Constellation Mission Operations
• Space-Based Data Relay (SBDR) and Space-Ground Communications (SGC)
• Collaborative Science
• Product Operations
• Data Delivery
• Algorithm Operations and Development

A roadmap for implementation has been created for each, beginning with the studies, pilots and demos and maturing into acquisition plans and final operational readiness. These proposed roadmaps integrate NGES analysis results, existing office or program activities, and NESDIS strategic plans. The roadmaps describe the implementation of prioritized capabilities as well as the path to an efficient ground enterprise. They also identify risk-mitigation activities with respect to the strategic implementation timelines for each respective prioritized architectural alternative.

To plan the migration from the current stove-piped architecture to an enterprise ground system architecture supportive of the future NESDIS satellite systems and data sources for all work products and services, the Ground Enterprise Engineering team is working at an enterprise level, coordinating across NESDIS offices and programs in the development of implementation roadmaps.

The authors will review how the six functional areas were identified, share the roadmaps for each and describe how they may be integrated into the future NESDIS ground system.
