The ISO propagation routes were separated using the ERA-5 re-analysis and changes in circulation features for submonthly (6-20-day) wave patterns and tropical cyclones (TCs) have been found in the western North Pacific (WNP). Submonthly wave patterns associated with TCs in the northward propagating ISO appeared to be more energetic. The durations of the corresponding TCs were also longer. However, in the westward mode, the background environment was not favorable for submonthly wave patterns. Thus, the submonthly wave pattern and TCs extracted less energy from the background flow in the westward mode than in the ISO northward mode.
