8B.3 Shining a Light on NWS Products: How Social Science Addresses Operational Challenges

NOAA continues to make tremendous strides integrating social, behavioral, and economic science (SBES) research with applications to move us toward a weather ready nation. To this aim, OAR’s Weather Program Office and NWS’ Office of Science Technology Integration SBES Program partner to advance SBES research insights into service delivery and product development. This talk will take a programmatic approach to highlight a select few social science projects specifically designed to address various NWS operational challenges, including an assessment of stakeholders’ perceptions and use of NWS Weather Prediction Center precipitation products and website, and a project aimed at developing a social network analysis of 4 communities who have experienced a fire weather event.
