Using Human Factors to Optimize Aviation Weather Products
Integrating an end-user perspective into the research and development of aviation weather products is vital to ensure the products are usable and suitable for optimum use. The Federal Aviation Administration’s Aviation Weather Demonstration and Evaluation (AWDE) Services team improves the delivery of capabilities developed within the FAA’s NextGen Aviation Weather Division by:
- Conducting end-user and stakeholder engagements through various forms of Cognitive Task Analysis methods
- Planning and leading user evaluations
- Conducting human factors research and data analysis
The AWDE Services team collaborates with internal FAA stakeholders and external agencies to deliver human factors expertise to advance FAA Aviation Weather research and initiatives. This paper will highlight recent AWDE Services user assessments and accomplishments, including:
- 2023 National Weather Service Aviation Weather Center Testbed Spring Experiment collaboration
- Offshore Precipitation Capability user assessment
- Terminal Precipitation on the Glass program collaboration
