Significant new features are being planned for Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), but things are different this time. Past improvements, such as longer WEA messages and enhanced geographic targeting, involved little risk. This time, things are different. New features, such as WEA in multiple languages and incorporation of maps, involve much greater risk. A concerted collaboration effort among industry, governments, and academia is needed to ensure these features have the desired impact of improving public response to emergency alerts. The new features are in response to the largest proposed rule making ever conducted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on changes to WEA.
