The NOAA Modeling Strategy is intended to improve the coordination and alignment of modeling across NOAA and with other Federal agencies and external community partners. By unifying modeling approaches across NOAA, leveraging a comprehensive earth system observation portfolio, investing in workforce development and training to better support a diverse modeling portfolio, and applying innovative AI and cloud technologies, NOAA will be well-positioned to achieve transformational advances in earth system modeling and effectively deliver enhanced forecast predictions, and projections to decision makers and the public. This strategy will also inform future budget, workforce, IT infrastructure, and HPC planning activities.
In this presentation, we will review the overarching goals of the strategy, which are:
- Unify modeling approaches across NOAA,
- Integrate modeling and observations of the environment,
- Implement an evidence-based governance model, including broad community involvement where possible,
- Advance software modernization across NOAA and effectively procure high performance computing assets,
- Bolster service delivery approaches and applications of innovative technologies, and
- Support workforce development.
Objectives under these goals will highlight how these goals will be attained. The vision and future plans for NOAA’s Earth System Modeling portfolio will also be shared, such as actionable goals and milestones resulting from the NOAA Modeling Strategy.
