Abstract

An Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) was launched with NOAA’s latest Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-18) on March 1, 2022. After rigorous post-launch on-orbit tests, a Provisional Maturity Review on July 28, 2023 determined that the key performance of its Level 1b product was sufficient for operational use and GOES-18 ABI became operational on January 4, 2023. In September 2023, ABI Level 1b data was reviewed again for its Full Validation Maturity. This final review evaluated the long-term stability, in particular seasonality of any performance, documented the tests that could not be completed at the Provisional Review, and addressed existing and new issues since the Provisional Review. It was found that the accuracy of radiometric calibration is adequate for the solar channels and far better than required for the infrared channels. Instrument noise for all channels is acceptable and, with the exception of the 3.9 µm channel, many times better than required. For geometric calibration or image navigation and registration (INR), the navigation error, within frame registration, channel-to-channel registration, frame-to-frame registration, and swath-to-swath registration all meet the requirements. The Barcode Artifact for the 3.9 µm channel has been benign since September 2022. This talk will highlight GOES-18 ABI calibration performance in its first year.
