The Department of Defense (DoD) requires reliable access to global environmental data. An important component of its situational awareness is provided by a family of systems approach, relying on capabilities from the United States, European and Japanese consortia of weather satellites. Upon the successful fielding of the GOES-R series of systems, the DoD approached the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) about repurposing one of its residual geostationary assets to increase coverage over the Indian Ocean Basin. In 2019, GOES-13 was transferred to the DoD, redesignated EWS-G and successfully placed into service over the Indian Ocean, increasing reliable access to environmental data worldwide. This talk will discuss the lessons learned and the technical challenges and successes of the program.
