Global Airline Operations: Navigating Space Weather in the 21 Century; a Flight deck perspective
Navigating space weather within the aviation sector brings many challenges to the airline environment. Airlines that view space weather with the same lens as terrestrial weather, will inherently find value in both operational efficiency and reduced harmful exposure from space weather phenomenon. Technological advancements in pre-departure planning, aircraft, and the Pilot/Flight Deck interface, all revolve around using the best forecast and space weather models for End User decision making. Airlines that take a proactive, space weather aviation-centric approach to training and building multi-stakeholder relationships across the industry can offset current complexities. Improved space weather models that provide near real-time, dose rate, Lat/Long specific measurements for radiation protection will allow End Users in the aviation sector to fill in the knowledge gaps for their operation and enhance decision making. Current and future successes in the aviation sector will come from advanced space weather modeling with extended lead forecast times, along with the ability for End Users to use risk mitigation procedures. Process improvements within individual airlines that deploy increased education, training, and threat prevention measures that align with the growing space weather industry can find themselves well positioned, and bridge the gap between terrestrial weather and space weather. This presentation will highlight the recent advances in the aviation sector and list the needed space weather products and services for our current Solar Cycle 25.
Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, near Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) serves as the certified collective bargaining agent for the 15,000 professional pilots who fly for American Airlines.
APA was founded in 1963 and is the largest independent pilots’ union in the world. APA provides a broad range of representation services for its members and devotes more than 20 percent of its dues income to support aviation safety.
