In early 2023, NASA and NOAA awarded the development contract for the Geostationary and Extended Observations (GeoXO) Imager (GXI). This instrument expands on the capability of the GOES-R ABI Imager by providing additional spectral coverage and increased spatial resolution. Once on-orbit, GXI’s capabilities will provide new insight into low level water vapor and enhance users’ ability to identify severe weather and wildfires.

Preliminary design details of GXI are provided, with a discussion of heritage to the legacy ABI Imager on the GOES-R constellation and an overview of development plans. A review of additional capabilities is provided summarizing the benefits of 2 new spectral bands, 3x raw image data, 4x resolution on seven spectral bands.
