NOAA has adopted a product portfolio management (PPM) approach to satellite derived operational products that promotes dynamic responsiveness to the evolving NOAA mission needs. This presentation will describe NOAA’s approach to product portfolio management and demonstrate how portfolio management reacts quickly to new emerging priorities through a fire weather example.
Air quality estimates associated with wildfires are a priority for NOAA missions. NOAA portfolio management identified a new Regional hourly ABI and VIIRS fire Emissions (RAVE) product to communicate air quality and accelerated the operational development as part of the Administration’s efforts for fire weather. The RAVE product increased NOAA’s ability to detect fire emission from daily to hourly, greatly improving the accuracy of the air quality forecasts.
