While AI has been in use for decades for some aspects of weather forecasting, in the past few years there has been exponential growth in the use and application of AI to a wide variety of weather phenomena. This is largely due to the recent exponential growth in deep learning, which is occurring across many fields. Focusing on weather forecasting, new AI methods are being developed across all sectors: academia, government, and private industry. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the current state of the art in AI for weather across scales, ranging from the storm-scale to the global-scale. These include methods such as global forecasting from private industry to innovative nowcasting products being developed by academia. I will also discuss how forecasting will change over the next 5-10 years with continued innovation in AI products.
