NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) works to provide timely access to global environmental data, products, and services. This data supports the US and global forecasting enterprise by providing reliable, high quality data for numerical weather prediction and publicly disseminated weather forecasts and warnings. Through investments in satellite and IT infrastructure NESDIS envisions a coordinated NOAA system upgrade that integrates data from the full NOAA observing system in the cloud for improved delivery to all users.
Growing user needs are driving next generation satellite architecture decisions such as higher resolution data, information for nowcasting, support for the blue economy, air quality and atmospheric chemistry observations, and the need for enhanced climate services. Many current satellite and environmental product innovations come from the field as well. This presentation will cover the NESDIS next generation satellite and data delivery plans, including highlights of current new and unique service applications.
