Weather.gov is owned by the National Weather Service (NWS). Weather.gov and associated applications are frequently in the Top-10 list of most-visited federal websites with 1.5 billion visits per year. They are a major source of life- and property-saving weather/water/climate information for the public and partners. Despite this, these web applications have not had any major public-facing upgrades in more than a decade.
With the backing of NWS leadership and alignment across the organization – we are making significant progress. User research has been conducted, we’ve prototyped our architecture, and a Minimum Viable Product is now being worked on. The aim of the project is to rebuild Weather.gov to reflect the integrity and care NWS has for the people it serves. Because the mission and culture at NWS is built around serving, preparing, and protecting people, Weather.gov 2.0 must do the same. Attendees of this session will see the progress that the team is making and gain an understanding of the foundational work that supports this effort.
